Why Sarmizegetusa Regia is special

This was the capital of the Dacian kingdom before Rome conquered it — a sacred and political centre with a genuinely mysterious circular sanctuary and a carved astronomical sundial, set in quiet Carpathian forest. It's the most complete surviving expression of Dacian civilisation anywhere, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The practicalities of a visit

The site is remote, deep in the Orăștie Mountains. There's no simple public-transport route, so a private driver-guide day trip — usually combined with Corvin Castle and Alba Iulia — is the standard way to see it.

Go slowly, and go guided

Between the terraced fortress and the sacred zone, there's real walking on uneven forest ground. A guide is genuinely valuable here — the site's Dacian, Roman and astronomical layers are complex and easy to miss without context.

Come prepared for a full day

Treat the trip as a full day given the mountain drive involved. Sturdy shoes, water, and — if possible — pairing it with Corvin Castle make the most of the journey into one of Europe's most significant pre-Roman capitals.
